Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.
The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.
"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.
RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."
Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The UN estimates IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
