The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.
The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
